BRIEF OUTLINE
D&AD New Blood Brief
Playground is a concept extension to the BBC children's learning resources, with it focusing on bringing aspects of the Playground environment that are left out of class room learning, into an online platform.
INITIAL RESEARCH
Research
Initial research was carried out into Learning and the learning behaviours linked with humans. Giving the project a background knowledge of learning, before specialising in how children learn.

CHILD SPECIFIC LEARNING
Research
When focusing my research on children - as the brief is to create an online learning resource for those between the age of 3-11 - i looked into the 3 main sources of learning for children, all of which are broken down to the left.
BENEFITS OF USING PLAY AS A FORM OF LEARNING
Research
When analysing the 3 methods of child-specific learning, the use of play was interesting. When thinking about the principle within state education, play is often overlooked and shamed, despite its clear importance.

CONCEPT PROBLEM
STATEMENT
Play is a vital aspect of learning overlooked by many parents and teachers during education, depriving children of developing key skills

ANALYSING BBC BITESIZE - AN EXISTING BBC LEARNING PLATFORM
Concept
The BBC already has existing learning platforms available such as BBC Bitesize, I wanted to look into the user journey and how this concept could take advantage of possible imperfections within the Bitesize Design.
IDEA GENERATION
Concept
After creating a concept statement, the next stage was to idea generate possible concepts for the final website. After the research stage, I was keen on merging the idea of learning and playing together.

FINAL CONCEPT
Concept
The idea that was chosen to be conceptualised was that of an interactive 3D playground that hosted games that would be found within a playground environment. This concept aims to allow children to access the skills learnt in a playground environment, anywhere at any time.
TYPOGRAPHY
Branding
Before beginning the prototyping stage, branding was something to focus on to help bring the concept to life. The aim is to create a brand identity that emphasises the fun and playfulness of play., one way of doing this was through the typeface.

LOGO
Branding
With the typeface complete, attention was turned to utilising the typeface within a logo for the concept. The BBC has multiple sub-brands that all have a unique logo, that includes the BBC mark. Using examples of these logos, I created my own.
BRAND IDENTITY
Branding
After finishing off the logo and the typeface which accompanies it, the next step was to finish the brand identity by adding the assisting fonts as well as the colour scheme. To keep the fun theme it was decided to accompany the main purple with a pink and orange gradient to enhance the boldness.

LOW FIDELTY WIREFRAMES
Prototyping
With all the preparation carried out it was time to begin. wireframing and prototyping the website. To the left are the low fidelity wireframes made to show the rough layout of the images and text.
3D PLAYGROUND
Prototyping
As stated in the final concept, the aim of the concept is to create an interactive learning platform based on playground experiences, to do this i planned on having a 3D playground as the centre of the website, to the right i the creation of this playground on Adobe Illustrator.

ICON DESIGN
Prototyping
One thing I was keen to incorporate within the design was the inclusion of 3D iconography to further enhance the playful and interactive theme. When analysing the design of Bitesize one noticeable design flaw was the two-dimensional feel of the design, this was something I wanted to avoid during my design. To the right is the icon set I designed as well as a visual of the icons included within the games tabs
HIGH FIDELITY WIREFRAMES
Prototyping
Before beginning the prototyping stage, branding was something to focus on to help bring the concept to life. The aim is to create a brand identity that emphasises the fun and playfulness of play., one way of doing this was through the typeface.
